Ten Valentine’s Days ago, Mr. Smith and I were a only few weeks into our engagement. Ten Valentine’s Days later, we are a few weeks into renovating our laundry room. Being in the middle of a grimy house project might not sound as romantic as being newly engaged, but I can honestly say that our relationship gets better every year. Still, like most couples, we need a boost from time to time and what better opportunity for a boost than a holiday devoted to love?
To be honest, Mr. Smith and I don’t prefer the typical dinner-and-a-movie-type date on Valentine’s Day. The crowds make us grumpy. Instead, we prefer a nice meal at home, a favorite movie on the couch and a small gift exchange. This year, I decided my gift would be in the form of a basket. And since one of my favorites hobbies is to walk around Target, I decided to hunt for my gift basket goodies there.
The first item on my list was a little something to boost intimacy. Solution: K-Y® Love Sensuality and Passion. It’s a practical product with a little fun mixed in making it perfect for spicing things up. If you’d like to surprise your own Valentine with K-Y® Love, enjoy this offer via Cartwheel for 10% off. K-Y® Love (found in the feminine care section) is a product exclusive to Target for Valentine’s Day. Offer is valid 2/1/15 through 2/14/15.
Next on my list was a sweater since I accidentally shrunk Mr Smith’s favorite. Ultimate laundry fail! I also included a bag of gummy worms because he’s such a catch. 😉 For the rest of the basket items, I turned to my favorite section in all of Target: THE DOLLAR SECTION!! You can find all sorts of fun loot there! It’s where I found a handy lighter and a package of instant hand warmers. Living in a house with no central heat, we build a lot of fires. Or rather, Mr. Smith builds a lot of fires. He also spends a lot of time outside in the cold chopping wood. Now he won’t have to fumble lighting matches with cold hands. Three cheers for practical gifts!
I was especially excited to discover the red plastic mailbox because I knew exactly what to do with it…
In 2007, Mr. Smith gave me a little wooden box with the word “Dreams” written on top of it. He said we needed a place to record and keep our dreams and aspirations. The first dream I put inside the box was for us to make a trip to England together. This past September, that dream came true! His dream box touched me so much that I wanted to give him something similar.
What will go in this mailbox?
Well…if you must know, Mr. Smith drives me crazy sometimes. And when he drives me crazy, I fuss at him. And when I fuss at him, I drive him crazy. (Does this happen to you, too?) Still, I don’t want a relationship where there are more deposits in the Fuss Bank than in the Love Bank. This mailbox will serve as a place where I can keep notes of all the aspects I appreciate about my husband. Then, whenever he needs a boost or I need a reminder, we can read the notes and reconnect.
If you prefer a little flair, the smooth sides of the mailbox make the perfect canvas for a little photo personalization. (This top pic is us enjoying an intimate moment in the shade of Ely Cathedral in England.) Here’s how you can create this look:
- Print out photos onto plain, white paper.
- Cut photos to fit the sides of the box.
- Paint a thin layer of glue/sealer on the back of the photo.
- Place the photo where you’d like it to go and carefully press out any air bubbles.
- Paint a thin layer of sealer over the top of the photo. Use thumb to wipe away any excess sealer around the edges of the photo.
- Allow to dry.
Sometimes passion and intimacy comes easily, and sometimes you have to think outside the box. Or in our case, inside the box. 🙂
It wouldn’t be Valentine’s Day at the Smith’s house without a good meal, a good movie and a big piece of Cherry Chocolate Cake. However, after having so much fun assembling Mr. Smith’s present, I might just add “gift baskets” to our list of traditions.
What are your Valentine’s Day traditions?
