Welcome to winter skin, everybody.
As an excema sufferer, my already dry and sensitive skin looks even more tortured in the winter.
Every winter for the past 10 years, I have developed stubborn, dime-sized dry patches on both cheekbones as well as flaky skin on my nose and chin and zits along my forehead.
Every winter except this one!
(These pics were taken without make-up or touch ups.)
Flake-free nose, blemish-free forehead….
…and look! A cheekbone, sans dry patch.
I’m truly shocked at how even and healthy my complexion has been this winter. (I mean, really, my face looks like the surface of Mars this time of year.)
So what’s my secret?
Here are the products I have been consistently using for close to a year….
SOAP: THE SHINY HINY’S ALL NATURAL GOAT’S MILK SOAP
(I wash my face with this in the morning and at night.)
Last March, I was introduced to a local soap maker who gave me a bar of her goat’s milk soap to try.
She said it would put an end to those dry patches.
And it did!
Again, I have very dry, very sensitive skin and the minute I change my facial regime, my skin lets me know it with flakiness, breakouts and dry patches. However, after using this soap through the summer, I noticed that no matter how sweaty or dirty I got, my skin was not breaking out like it usually would.

(I use this on my face and body at night.)
Last year, my go-to store-brand of fragrance-free lotion suddenly wasn’t cutting it. I’d rub it into my arms and legs and it would burn and itch.
I decided it was time to take care of the largest organ of my body by investing in good-quality, paraben-free lotion.
This lotion soaks right into my skin without any burning or itching, and as a result, my skin feels stronger and more whole.
MOISTURIZER: NEUTROGENA OIL-FREE MOISTURIZER WITH SUNSCREEN
(I use this on my face during the day.)
Face products, especially those containing sunscreen, almost always cause my skin to rebel. Still, I refuse to go out without sunscreen!
This moisturizer from Neutrogena has an SPF 30 and makes my face feel happy.
SPOT-TREATMENT: PETROLEUM JELLY
(I apply this at night to any area that feels dry and patchy or looks flaky.)
When I wake up, any flakiness on my forehead, cheeks or nose is gone.
AND THE MOST IMPORTANT WEAPON OF ALL?……
My skin dislikes inconsistency almost as much as perfumes and parabens.
- I use only these products daily. (If I need to wash my face but don’t have my soap, I just use plain water instead of whatever soap is available. Otherwise, my face will immediately break out.)
- I use only tepid or cold water to wash my face. Hot water dries skin out!
- Speaking of water, I drink about 1-2 gallons a day. Every day. All day. (What does the camel say?)
- I exercise and get all sweaty. Sweat is good for cleansing the pores. Just shower afterwards. 🙂
- I rarely wear make-up. If so, I only use Almay and only for about 4 hours. After 4 hours, my face revolts.
It feels so good to have happy winter skin.
I hope this guide has helped you. 🙂
Here’s to your best winter face!
